We know, we know… you read the title of this post and thought just one word: FINALLY. It may have taken us two and a half years, but the audiobook version of It Starts With Food is now available via Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. Hoorah!
Our hope is that this new format will give our community what you’ve been asking for, and also help us share our Good Food word with millions of people (we’re ambitious) looking for a heatlhy, sustainable way to permanently change their relationship with food.
Reading Out Loud is Hard
You’ve been asking for an audiobook since It Starts With Food first came out in June 2012. So why the delay? Because you really wanted us (Dallas and Melissa) to read it. We offered to get you guys a professional reader or Morgan Freeman, but according to all of our social media polls, the former didn’t interest you and the latter was too expensive. Honestly, we thought it was kind of cool that you wanted us to read it. But do you know how long it takes to read a 90,000 book out loud perfectly?
So long. Turns out it took us 72% longer than it would have taken Morgan Freeman.
This fall, we carved out a few weeks in our schedule to retool the book so it works for an audio audience (changing phrases like “keep reading” to “keep listening”), recreate some of the appendix content and charts in PDF format so audio listeners wouldn’t miss out on anything (did you really want us to read recipe ingredients?), and channel our inner movie announcer (“In a world…).
Finally, one sunny day in September, we got into the studio and started reading out loud. And immediately discovered that reading out loud is incredibly hard. Dallas read like he was on meth. Melissa sounded like an NPR talk show host—the sedated ones who put you to sleep, not the enchanting Terry Gross. We missed words, flubbed pronunciations, and did take after take after take. But then, things smoothed out. We started to get the hang of this reading out loud stuff. We listened back to ourselves and thought, we don’t hate it.
Which is basically the highest compliment you can grant when listening to or watching yourself speak.
It took us a little over two weeks working three hours a day to finish the basic reading, and then another few days to clean up any noisy spots or “do you have to breathe so loud?” moments… and now we’re done. And you can start listening to us reading It Starts With Food on your drive to work tomorrow.
Plus one for instant gratification.
Purchase and Review (Please)
In fact, if you listen, we would really appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to leave a review on iTunes or Audible. Your reviews can really help other people browsing the diet book category, unaware that there’s a better option than a 7-day get-skinnier-than-your-friends-while-detoxing-with-wheatgrass approach. If you changed your life with the Whole30 and It Starts With Food, leave a review and encourage others to change their lives, too. (Also, please remember as you review that this was a labor of love for us. We’re not professionals, but we poured our hearts into this project, and hope that you appreciate the words coming straight from us as much as we loved reading them to you.)
Finally, rest assured that you won’t miss out on any of the content of It Starts With Food if you purchase the audiobook format. If you purchase through Audible or iTunes, we’ve made the content that didn’t translate well into audiobook format (like charts and graphs, some illustrations, the Meal Map and recipes, our resources, and scientific references) available as a free PDF download with your purchase. You’ll find these PDFs in your Audible or iTunes libraries when you buy the book, but note that you may find it in your iTunes music library instead of your books. (Weird, but sometimes that happens.)
