by Shanna Keller, who is always looking for excuses to host a Whole30 happy hour
Please welcome our newest Whole30 Approved partner, hint® water!
hint offers pure, unsweetened water infused with natural fruit flavors. It’s light, refreshing, and a fantastic way to introduce a little variety into your Whole30 beverage rotation—especially when you’re looking to kick your heels up during a party or special event.
I was particularly struck by hint water’s tasty flavors. They’re subtle and delicious, but not overpowering… which got my creative wheels turning at the thought of all the ways I could use them. One of my favorite ideas? Pairing different flavors of hint water with complementary Whole30 small-plate dishes. Try one of the pairings below at your next dinner party or weekend brunch, or make all four for a fun Whole30 happy hour.

And now… onto the pairings!
Cucumber hint water and Prosciutto-Wrapped Cantaloupe
Cucumber hint® water is refreshing and light, a fantastic warm weather beverage. Try it with the Seared Sea Bass with Wasabi Butter, Green Onions and Peaches from The Whole30 Cookbook, or this simple appetizer prosciutto-melon appetizer below.
1 small cantaloupe, cut into 12 uniform slices
6 slices prosciutto, cut in half to yield 12 long, thin strips
WRAP one strip of prosciutto around a cantaloupe slice. Serve and enjoy.
Pear hint water and Fig and Arugula Salad with Grilled Chicken
Warm spices compliment the juicy flavor of Pear; the salad below highlights pepper-y arugula and sweet fig. Or, try the pear hint® water with the Ginger-Coconut Chicken “Noodle” Bowl from The Whole30 Cookbook (page 136).
1 Tbs Olive Oil
1 Tbs White Wine Vinegar
1 tsp brown mustard (Whole30 compliant)
4-5 generous handfuls of arugula
1 grilled, sliced chicken breast
*note: fresh figs are typically only available seasonally, but I had luck finding flash-frozen figs in the frozen foods section. You can also substitute dried figs, just make sure that they aren’t sweetened.
IN a small bowl, whisk the olive oil, white wine vinegar and brown mustard. Dress arugula with the vinegarette. Slice figs, and toss with the arugula. Plate the arugula and figs on a platter.
TOP the salad with grilled chicken breast. Serve and enjoy.
Citrus Tossed in Basil and Mint with Mango Grapefruit hint water
Mango-grapefruit hint® water pairs well with fresh, fruit-and-herb flavors; try it with the Skewered Ginger-Mango Chicken with Curried Bok Choy from The Whole30 Cookbook, or add the simple citrus and herb dish below to your meal.
1 blood orange
1 naval orange
3-4 large basil leaves, torn
6-7 mint leaves, torn
SEGMENT* the citrus fruits. In a medium bowl, toss them in chopped basil and mint. Allow the dish to sit for 25 minutes so the flavors may mingle.
*note: learning to properly segment citrus is one of the more fancy things I’ve ever done in my life; watch this video for a tutorial.
Cinnamon and Nutmeg Roasted Almonds
The blood orange hint® water is versatile… just think of all of the things citrus pairs with. The simple roasted almond recipe below is the perfect small bite to put out as a starter course during a party; for a meal pairing try the One-Pan Herb-Crusted Roasted Salmon with Roasted Broccoli Steaks on page 200 of The Whole30 Cookbook.
1 egg white
1 teaspoon cold water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
PREHEAT oven to 250 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
MIX the salt, ground cinnamon and nutmeg in a small dish.
LIGHTLY beat the egg white. Add water, and beat until frothy. Do not over-beat; the egg white should not form peaks. Add the nuts, and stir until well coated. Sprinkle the nuts with the spice mixture and gently stir to evenly distribute.
EVENLY distribute almonds in a single layer on the baking pan. Bake for 1 hour. Allow to cool. Store leftover nuts in an airtight containers.
