Motivation takes many forms. A sticky note on the bathroom mirror. The buzz of a gentle reminder on your smart watch. A favorite podcast. Your friends. Your family. Your future self.
For Kelly S., it was her wedding rings.
“I had been doing a low-carb, kind of whole foodie type elimination before,” she said. “I had lost a good amount of weight before I had done this. But my wedding rings still wouldn’t fit my fingers. They were just super tight. So I’m like, there is something else going on.”
Kelly has had achy joints as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure. Tired of feeling that way, she started her search for answers with a trip to her doctor.
“My doctor had wanted to put me on a statin, and I’m like, ‘No, no, let’s let me do something first,’” Kelly said.
That something was a Plant-Based Whole30. Kelly joined a Whole30 Community Cohort to help her get the kind of support she thought she required during her journey.
“I am very much a community person,” she said. “I want feedback. I want to talk to people about my struggles. I want to encourage others with theirs. It was something that I knew that I needed in order to be successful, especially with doing a Plant-Based Whole30, which was completely outside of my wheelhouse. I knew I would need the extra support and reinforcement.”
The support, accountability, and community spirit of the live Cohort turned out to be exactly what Kelly needed. She also learned an important lesson about the importance of reintroduction.
“There is magic in that Whole30 and those 30 days,” Kelly said. “But reintroduction is actually a lot of where the magic does start to happen—where the mindfulness really sets in.”
All of the effort of elimination and reintroduction paid off. Kelly saw her numbers go down 30 points in 60 days. That’s impressive enough by itself, but that’s only the start of Kelly’s list of non-scale victories (NSVs).
“Being also in my forties now, we’re approaching menopause, and so now we’re watching out for all of that stuff, too,” she said. “I noticed that the symptoms that I was having reduced, as well.”
There was one more huge win. It wasn’t a feeling or even a number reflected in Kelly’s blood work. Instead, it was a sparkling victory Kelly S. couldn’t possibly ignore.
“My wedding rings were fitting,” she said. “And were actually loose on my body.”
