A homemade taco seasoning is a staple you will find yourself using again and again. This is especially true on a Whole30. Many commercially prepared taco seasoning packets are not compatible due to added sugar or preservatives. This taco seasoning is not only sugar-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free, but it only takes 5 minutes to put together. Better yet, it’s budget-friendly, uses basic spices you might already have or are easy to find and is adjustable to your desired heat level.
Making your own taco seasoning ensures it has no added sugar or unwanted gums and keeps the ingredients super simple. Keep it extra budget-friendly by shopping at a store that with bulk spices bins, allowing you to only buy the amount you need. Plus, you can adjust the red pepper flakes to make it mild or extra hot, depending on how you prefer it! This seasoning has a medium heat level, as written. Leave out the red pepper flakes for a mild taco seasoning. Or double the red pepper flakes to make it hot!
Lets taco ’bout it!
As is, this recipe creates two tablespoons of Whole30 taco seasoning, equal to the amount in a traditional seasoning packet. So, if you make a larger batch, just measure out two tablespoons for each pound of ground meat. This is a great recipe to 3-4x so you have plenty for all your taco-stuffed sweet potatoes, lettuce-wrapped fajitas, and burrito bowls!
Tacos are a fast, less than 30-minute meal — even if you are making this seasoning from scratch. We love taco meat in taco salads with lettuce guacamole, salsa, ranch, and cauliflower rice (tossed with a little lime juice and cilantro) or in a butter lettuce leaf for a taco shell.
